“The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha, the first ever in the region and the first in winter, is an important recognition of Qatar’s growing role in sport and an extraordinary opportunity for the country. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, united by a single passion – football – will pour into the streets of Doha to cheer and celebrate their national team. Doha is preparing with determination, enthusiasm and vision. Alongside investments in infrastructure, stadiums and engineering works of excellence and environmental sustainability, there is a great deal of attention for the development of cultural and tourist offer and services in the field of education and health. Italy is part of this “visionary” path through the appreciated contribution of our fellow countrymen in all sectors: from construction companies, to health and medical professionals, to excellence in the fields of design, crafts and creative arts, not to mention cooking, catering and agri-food production. An opportunity and a challenge to share the high quality and creativity of Italian “know-how” and to further strengthen the excellent relationships of friendship that bind us to Qatar”. -S.E. Pasquale Salzano Ambassador of Italy to Qatar.

On 3 September, the emblem of the Fifa World Cup 2022 was presented to the world. Doha, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, will be the focus of this extraordinary event, which will take place from 21 November to 18 December 2022, thus avoiding the prohibitive weather conditions of the summer months in the UAE.

The official logo, which will accompany the new season of the World Cup, has been chosen as the symbol of infinity, which encloses multiple meanings, mainly wants to represent the sinuous lines of the desert sands, which will frame the event and at the same time, the eight stadiums in which the football matches will be played. The coat of arms, in addition to recalling the effigy of the Cup that will be raised by the winners, is a clear reference to the typical wool shawl, distinctive garment of the Arab Emirate of the Persian Gulf.

While in Rome the official presentation of the logo of the Championships was underway, the Dhow (traditional Qatar boat, used for pearl fishing) “Fath al Khair” was coming to the Port of Venice; with its sails the ship sailed the Seas, leaving from the coast of Qatar, as ambassador of the Qatar maritime culture, as well as a symbol of union among peoples and good wishes, literary translation of its name. Not only will the desert dunes represent the event, then, but the sea itself will be the creative impulse that will be expressed with bright colors on that wonderful canvas, which is Qatar.

After the arrival in the Venetian Lagoon of the ship of “good wishes”, the coat of arms of the World Cup 2022 was projected on monuments and buildings of the capital of the Arab Emirate, Doha – at 20:22 – and simultaneously in 23 other countries, such as Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Iraq, as well as in the Sultanate of Oman and other countries, such as the United States of America – in New York – Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Turkey, India, South Korea, South Africa, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Russia, as well as in the city of Rio and of course in Italy, where the logo illuminated the Arch of Peace in the beautiful city of Milan in Piazza Sempione, at 21:22 Italian time.

“We are happy with the success and enthusiasm that the journey of our ‘Ship of Good Wishes’ (Fattah Al Kheir), which after arriving in the Port of Venice, continued to the shores of Sicily, has aroused. This ship began its journey to Doha, Istanbul, then Croatia, Malta, Venice and soon will be in Sicily,” said the Ambassador of the State of Qatar in Italy H.E. Abdulaziz Ahmed Almalki; “One of the objectives is certainly to publicize the 2022 World Cup, but also to make known and discover to Italians the tradition and culture of the people of Qatar, who have always lived at sea and with the sea.

The publisher Margherita Chiara Immordino Tedesco with the international artist Augusto Poderosi and Mussa Zidan responsible for communication cultural center katara village.

Mondi, in the person of Margherita Chiara Immordino Tedesco, participated in the official presentation of the logo of the World Championships, which took place in Rome, at the Embassy of Qatar, during which the owner of the diplomatic headquarters, H.E. Abdulaziz Ahmed Almalki, said: “I am pleased to announce that my country, Qatar, has completed all its commitments to the World Cup. We have built the stadiums, the necessary railway lines and all the infrastructure, such as roads and tunnels, essential for the event. 80% of the works are finished and what I can assure you is that ‘Qatar 2022’ will be a great opportunity and a great success. I hope that our national team will be in the finals with Italy. I’m sure we’ll make it.

Eight modern and futuristic sports complexes will host the expected event, such as the prestigious LUISAIL Stadium, which with its 80,000 seats, will be the largest arena in which the first Arab World Cup in history will be held. The Stadium is located fifteen kilometers from Doha and, in addition to the final, will also host the opening match of the Tournament on November 21, 2022.

The AL WAKRAH Stadium will be the new symbol of the seaside city, whose shape is inspired by a boat traditionally used in Qatar for the search of pearls and will be equipped with a retractable roof for constant use throughout the year, also offering the possibility of cooling the stands up to 18 degrees Celsius and up to 20 the playing field.

The AL BAYT Stadium will be located in Al Khor, a town about 40 km north of Doha, taking its name from Bayt Al Sha’ar, the traditional Bedouin tent used in Qatar, which was visible at great distances for its coloring, for the benefit of those who were facing arduous journeys in the desert, is a symbol of a promise of hospitality, which is a fundamental principle of Emirates culture. Also internally the Stadium will remember the typical welcoming and red coloured environment of the local tents and will have a capacity of 60,000 seats.

The AL RAYYAN Stadium, resembling a sand dune, built on the site of the former “Ahmed Bin Ali” arena, will house 40,000 seats, an aquatic center and additional sports facilities that will surround the Stadium.

The AL THUMAMA Stadium, located near Doha Hamad International Airport, will have a circular design and ultra-modern roof. The design of the stadium is inspired by the gahfiya, a traditional woven hat worn for centuries by men in many Arab countries. In Qatar and surrounding states, men wear the gahfiya under the ghutra (cotton fabric) and the agal (black decorative rope).

The EDUCATION CITY Stadium will be located in the heart of Education City, home to the Qatar Foundation (QF) and will look like a “diamond in the desert”. The facade is characterized by complex geometric patterns, which will seem to change color like the reflections of the sun in the sky. The Qatar Foundation Stadium is aiming for LEED Gold certification. To this end, the photovoltaic panels and solar thermal roof will produce energy and hot water, to be used both for the stadium and for the surrounding sports facilities. At least 20% of the materials used for construction are expected to come from sustainable sources and 50% of the woody materials are expected to come from sustainable forest management.

The KHALIFA Stadium is located about 14 km from the center of Doha within the Aspire Zone, home to Aspire Academy (sports academy aimed at training young athletes, many of whom will then be involved in the 2022 Championships), Aspetar (Sports Hospital of Excellence, accredited by FIFA) and various sports facilities. The Stadium was founded in 1976 and was renovated in 2006, on the occasion of the Asian Game in 2022 and will host the quarter-final.

The RAS ABU ABOUD Stadium, which will be built on the seafront of Doah, precisely in the district of Ras Abu Aboud, has a completely modular and removable structure, thanks to the construction that will take place through containers and modular elements. The result will be a unique, boldly coloured and completely modern Arena, which will appear to have been built with steel bricks.

“We have an excellent relationship with the Italian Republic, with which in recent years we have had a trade that has exceeded 16 billion euros. Many Italian companies have been invited to collaborate in the World Cup project, including many private sector companies in various parts of the world. The construction of two roads was entrusted to an Italian company. The 2022 World Championship Organizing Committee has published a long list of contracts awarded to companies from all over the world; I would also like to point out that a large part of them have been awarded to Italian companies and I am extremely happy about this,” said Ambassador H.E. Abdulaziz Ahmed Almalki, during the official presentation of the World Championship logo at the Italian Embassy of the State of Qatar.”

“This is the first time ever that the World Cup is held in the Middle East and will be a great opportunity to visit Qatar before, during and after the event. Visitors from all over the world will be numerous and the inauguration will be attended by heads of state, prime ministers, ministers, ambassadors, directors of sports clubs, illustrious people from various sectors, from around the world and will be invited all companies that have won contracts in the construction of infrastructure. The Organizing Committee and the ticket pre-sale follows and will follow the guidelines and criteria of FIFA. The technicians responsible for our national team are very good and I am sure that our team will be more than competitive in the coming World Cup. Football is the gathering of the peoples who meet for a common goal. The siege on Qatar has never had a real foundation, the reasons for the differences with Egypt, Iraq and other countries have damaged four hundred thousand families and we hope that this event will bring together all nations.”

With the “Gulf crisis”, which began on 5 June 2017, a diplomatic, economic and logistical embargo was imposed on Doha. After exactly two years, the Prime Minister of Qatar, H.E. Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani declared that the only solution was dialogue, stating that the crisis had created a “new reality, bringing also new crises, that the country had managed to overcome, taking countless steps towards the realization of its projects and objectives. What was called the Proxi war and the resulting aggressive policies put Qatar initially in a difficult situation.

The event will aim not only to offer a unique experience to all sports fans, but also to relaunch the image of Qatar in the world, an image that unfortunately “the siege” tried to compromise with accusations, considered totally groundless by the Emirates government, which rejected them categorically and firmly from the beginning.

“We call it a siege and it’s the blockade imposed on Qatar. I can say, thank God, that we have overcome it, going ahead with our projects, so it has not had any effect on our work, indeed in the previous three years we have signed many agreements and collaborations with various countries and with the Italian Republic. Our commitment has increased in order to achieve the best 2022 World Cup with a precise programme, which is respected to the letter and as H.E. the Emir of Quatar said, that God safeguards and preserves it: this World Cup is for all Arabs and for the whole world”. H.E. Abdulaziz Ahmed Almalki”
